Finally a Good Gluten Free Hot Dog Bun!

It has been six years since we had a decent hot dog, not to mention hamburger!  But the wait is over thanks once again to Udi's!

When we first went gluten free we basically gave up any bread products.  Back then, the only bread you could find had to be stored in the freezer and toasted before it resembled anything close to what we thought bread should taste like.  And speaking of taste, it was pretty bland and dry like sand in your mouth.

Then along came Udi's and once again we are experiencing the All-American sandwich.  My kids were in awe the first time I made grilled cheese with tomato soup!  We loved the even-better French Toast.  We are so thankful for a sandwich bread that actually survives in the lunch box!

We have been anxiously waiting for a good hot dog and hamburger bun.  When I saw the new Udi buns on the shelves at Whole Foods and PCC last week, the wait was over.  

I came home that night and made hot dogs!  

We rarely eat them anymore because it is no fun to eat a hot dog on a bun that crumbles into a million pieces.  But not the Udi buns.  We grilled the hot dogs until they were perfectly flame broiled on the outside but so juicy that the moment you bit into them the flavor exploded in your mouth.  The hot dogs were accompanied, of course, by Udi hot dog buns that were warmed on the grill.  The buns were perfect - they didn't crumble into a hundred pieces and they tasted, well normal!  Even my "vegetarian" Gluten Free Teen ate one!

We were so excited about the buns that we had hot dogs on Monday night, hamburgers on Wednesday and Friday night I baked the Bell and Evans Chicken Breast and we had chicken sandwiches (the Middle Child declared they were just like Red Robin).  By Saturday, I am pretty sure I had gained a pound or two, so we went back on our naturally gluten free low-card diet but how fun just to experience some of the things we "used to eat."

Gluten Free Restaurants New York City

The Middle Child and I have just returned from a great adventure in New York City.   We loved Broadway and shopping, but we also loved eating! 

If you live in New York City and you are gluten free, you should not be hungry! 

Of course, we visited one of our favorite gluten free restaurants,  Risotteria, 270 Bleecker Street (212) 924 6664.  

The neighborhood around Rissoteria looked the same as in did three years ago - a more "normal" neighborhood after being up on 5th Avenue all weekend.  The same super market with the fresh fruit outside was next door and the same guitar shop was across the street. We were even seated at the same seats that the Gluten Free Teen and I ate at three years ago.

Barely a slip of a restaurant with minimal seating tucked along the window, we were greeted with fresh from the oven breadsticks! The Middle Child devoured them and ordered more.  We ate cheese pizza and lemon and pine nut risotto for me. Stuffed completely once again.  We ordered a dozen breadsticks to go (to bring home for the Gluten Free Teen) and a big brownie as a snack for the airplane. 

 

 

The bread sticks alone made the trip worthwhile.

NFCA - Blogger of the Day

May is Celiac Awareness Month and The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) is running a Blogger a Day feature on their website!

I am the "Blogger of the Day" over at the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness website today!

 I first became aware of the NFCA when I was consulting with Savory Moment to help them transition to offering gluten free food.  At that point in time, a representative from NFCA actually helped train Savory Moment employees about how to produce gluten free products.
